A multiple stakes winner was recently pulled from a NJ kill pen despite a return to owner sticker on his registration papers.  Hidden Meadows Equine Rescue (HMER) was contacted by Camelot auctions and given the option to rescue 3 Off The Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs).  After obtaining consults from several mentors as to how to handle the controversial purchase of OTTBs from kill buyers, and having spoken with and being encouraged by Lenny Hale of the Charles Town HBPA, HMER went forward with the decision to raise funds and bail for 3 Thoroughbred "geldings."  Little did we know the Gems we would find !

Funds to rescue the 3 OTTBs were raised privately. On January 26, 2009, HMER met with the owner of Camelot Auctions at New Holland where the exchange of bail for horses took place. It was discovered there that we actually saved 1 gelding, 1 stallion, and 1 mare. All three horses were taken to HMER for quarantine in quarantine corrals. Three blankets were subsequently obtained due to inclement weather that was fast approaching that evening. On the trip home from New Holland, Rambo blankets from Poor House Road Tack Shop were purchased to protect the three thoroughbreds from the cold and snow that arrived later that night.

HMER's vet, Valley Equine, was called during the trip from New Holland to HMER, at which time a Thursday appointment was made for all three of the rescues to receive a baseline evaluation, vaccinations, Coggins, and whatever else was determined to be needed at that time.

On January 29, 2008, Dr. Keith Berkeley of Valley Equine came out to HMER, where all three rescues received baseline evaluations, lameness exams, vaccinations, and Coggins. All three horses were found to be in relatively good health. All three horses were scheduled to have dental and farrier work done.

The stallion unfortunately did not have a tattoo, but was estimated to be 3 years of age. HMER could use help identifying him.

The filly turned out to be Nahara, a regally bred filly by the Irish stallion River Keen with $1,642,272 in earnings and out of Tugy by Nijinsky's Secret with $787,932 in earnings. Nahara was raced at Suffolk Downs with her last race having been approximately 90 days ago.  HMER spoke to Sam Elliott, who thanked us for saving Nahara. Nahara's breeder will be adopting Nahara when she is ready.

The golden horse of the three thoroughbreds turned out to be Sir Jackie, a multiple stakes winner with a huge list of accomplishments, these include:

Upon contacting Sir Jackie's last trainer of record, Patrick Quick, we learned that Jackie had been placed as a companion horse in Pennsylvania on January 17, 2009. Jackie was subsequently dropped off at the direct-to-slaughter pen at Camelot Auctions on January 21, 2009, and HMER rescued him on January 26, 2009. Jackie is currently in very good health. Jackie appears to have been very well cared for during his post racing career.

Contact was made with previous trainers and owners, who were horrified to learn of the frightening circumstances in which their beloved Jackie had found himself.   It is very important to note that while this horse appeared very well placed, his safety net was ignored on his registration papers, where it had been noted to return him to a previous owner. HMER has pulled several OTTB's and later found that previous owners had no knowledge of their fate.

It is very important to have follow ups done periodically, so please check on horses - even those that you believe have been safely placed. AT HMER, we highly encourage written contracts and at least a 1 dollar exchange for all horses turned over to retirement homes. We have discovered that, due in part to current economic conditions, well placed horses are ending up in kill pens. If you have placed horses within the past 2 years, please reach out to these people and check on your horses.

HMER is so glad and thankful that we were fortunate enough to be a part of saving these three thoroughbreds from a certain, horrific death.   We were able to assist primarily because of the kindness and generosity of HMER's private donors, who make it possible for us to continue to help horses like Sir Jackie and Nahara.  To them we are especially grateful.

All 3 horse will be available for adoption in the future. For more information about HMER and the services we provide, please visit our website at www.HMER.org

These horses were not unwanted, they were unknown!

Larrup was taken to Dr. Ian Harrison for an Emergency Visit today. He was treated for Thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein which is a large blood clot and massive infection that occurs as a complication from IV catheter placement.   The next 48 hours are critical. Larrup will require 20 minutes of heat applied directly to the affected area every 2 hours around the clock along with a regime of Aspirin twice daily, Bute 2gm twice daily, DMSO applied on the site, and SMZ 15 tablets twice daily. Dr. Harrison is very optimistic that he will recover, but I have to be very diligent about heat every 2 hours for 20 minutes.  If the clot does not lessen in that time frame, he will have to have surgery to remove the piece of affected vein in his neck.

This is very serious. Please say your prayers for Larrup.   Funds are desperately needed to help cover these expenses and the expenses to come. Todays bill was $230, he will have a followup next week most likely the same amount, then his knee will be injected if the infection has clear up in 2 weeks $185, and then he will have to have a 6 week follow-up (don't know how much that will be.) Assuming around $100. I know we are looking around $845! I can call Dr. Harrison tomorrow to check on the 6 week follow-up tomorrow.   If you want to contribute to the medical expenses for this, please send money to:

Our plan was to create a short term placement for equines in transition....A rescue that would provide care, rehabilitation and adoption services for abused, neglected, abandoned and otherwise unwanted horses.

Pretty simple, we thought--help a few horses out, we thought. We were not prepared for the floodgates that opened. The past 3 months have been an eye opener for everyone involved with Equine Rescue. We have taken in horses with physical scars of which we can only guess what happened, Others with emotional scars that won't allow them to trust again, and those poor souls who have been starved and otherwise neglected.

But we have also helped dozens of horses and ponies find homes with people who have given them another chance at being useful riding horses or companions.

Please take a few minutes to browse our website and learn about our horse rescue work and to meet the horses that are waiting for a new chance in life.
