Thoroughbreds as well as many other breeds can/are be successful show or pleasure mounts. With the proper training there are no limits to what these horses can become/do. Many are excelling in eventing, dressage, foxhunting, hunter, jumper, competitive trail riding, pleasure riding, 4H, Pony Club, western pleasure, baby sitting, barrel racing, and carriage driving. These highly athletic and intelligent horses have so much to offer the individuals that take the time to teach them.
Adoption Process:
#1 Submit an Application
Interested individuals may submit an application online , by mail or fax. Questions are asked concerning experience and stabling. Veterinarian, Farrier, Equine Dentist, and Professional and personal references are required. Applicants must be approved prior to visiting the facilities. If out of state please submit photos of your farm/facility. If boarding please notify the facility we will be contacting them.
#2 Approval
Processing time depends on accessibility of references. Applicants are notified of status approval/denial via email or other requested means.
#3 Choosing a Horse
Available horses are listed on the website with multiple photographs and a detailed description. Approved adopters can make an appointment to view, meet, ride, and interview horses of interest. Adopters who work with trainers are encouraged to include them in the selection process. Prepurchase exams are recomended but not required.
#4 Adoption Fees
Adoption fees average $0 to $2,500, the average ranging between $0-$750 depending on the age and physical limitations of the horse. Fees are waived on companion horses, the aged and those facing long rehabilitations.
#5 Adoption Contract
The Adoption Contract is for 5 years. Should the horse prove unsuitable for the purpose adopted, it can be returned for a full refund within 30 days, provide the horse is returned in condition adopted. After one year the horse may change hands, but HMER has the first right of refusal and must be notified with contact information for the new owner should we choose not to exercise our FROR.
Once a horse is adopted delivery, shipping and/or pickup can be coordinated with HMER. Appointments are necessary. If your horse must stay beyond 10 days a daily board charge applies. During this time your horse will be stall boarded.
#7 Updates
Adopters must email, mail, or fax four written updates with photos during the first year. We retain the right to share updates on horses with donors, and sponsors.
